The Elements of Typographic Style 2024
Services: Book Design, Typography, Composition
Project Overview
On the left page, different experimental designs are done, such as bold, italic, stacked, melting, and bleeding. These alterations to the text have to do with what the content is saying in that specific section. To keep consistency, the body text is always on the right side, in columns. I want the book to be written in columns so that it can flow better and make space more visually interesting. I chose Bodoni and Trade Gothic font families because one is a serif font and the other is a sans-serif. Bodoni is going to be used for titles and headlines, while Trade Gothic will be used for body text, folios, and footers. Bodoni is a bold yet soft font that is classy yet clean. I picked out Trade Gothic to match it because it is easy to read as body text unlike a serif typeface. Also, after comparing many other body texts, it seemed to fit the content the best.
Challenges
The purpose of this book is to teach the basics of typography and show how to design text better. The book design keeps the reader engaged as well as makes the content stand out. When I first read the text I noticed a lot of interesting words. Some of the words that caught my eye were, liveliness, laughter, grace, joy, alive, performance, and rhythmical systems. The author, Robert Bringhurst associates typography with movement. I wanted the text as well as my designs to flow throughout the book. The intended audience for this book is typography nerds and art students. My design will connect to this audience by having bright colors and bold visuals, while still having a classy and organized educational appeal.
